Magnified GivingMagnified Giving is our local partner and a wonderful philanthropy education program. They generously provide funds so that we can make a grant of at least $1000 to a local non-profit this year. Completing your local action can happen through participation in Magnified Giving .

Direct v. Indirect ServiceDirect service is done directly for a non-profit, usually either at their offices, or with the clients they serve at other locations. These are the type of hours that build your understanding of the problem of hunger because they provide meaningful contact with people. Five direct service hours are required each semester, for a total of ten. Direct service hours can also be counted as white hours for school.
Indirect service is done away from the clients and the organization. This can come in the form of research, raising awareness, raising funds, participating in Magnified Giving, or advocacy. It is important, but takes place after direct service has helped to make you more aware of the needs in our Cincinnati community. If you are going to complete the AP with WE Service program, ten indirect service hours are needed in addition to your direct service. These probably won't count towards your IH service requirement. Working on a team to help with our Magnified Giving event is indirect service, for one example. You can also use class time to create and execute your own service project if you have an idea and get it approved by me. The direct service requirement is easy to meet if you plan ahead. If you decide to do your service at the last minute and don't have much time left, all the spots may be full for your desired service organization. Be aware of the deadlines below and plan ahead. Fall Service Deadline: Monday Dec. 9th, 2019
Spring Service Deadline: Monday March 2nd, 2020 #1 Submit your service hours on x2Vol (school system) so you can get credit for school. If I set up the service event, it will already be on x2Vol and you can just sign up there.
#2 Submit your hours using the reflection link below to get credit for class. |
Meeting your service requirement is important and easy, but you will need to take it seriously, plan ahead and follow the guidelines. The last thing I want to do is reject someone's service at the last minute when it is too late to get it done properly. Below you will find a list of organizations that are already approved in advance. You can perform your direct service for any of these organizations and know that it will be accepted.
The objective in this class is to investigate different ways to solve the problems of hunger and food insecurity. That cannot be accomplished by volunteering all your time for the same organization. Read the requirements carefully and ask questions. When in doubt, get pre-approved. Pre-approved OrganizationsYour service this year must expose you to two different strategies for solving food insecurity. You cannot meet the requirement if all your service is in the same category. Aim for five hours in one category and five in another. Six and four will work.
